GCU COMPILE ITS SPORTS HISTORY (DAILY THE NATION LAHORE)

Lahore: The Government College University Lahore has teamed up with Old Ravians to compile its glorious 146-year sports history. The decision to bring on record the services of GCU sports lengends was taken at a meeting of GCU official with former Olympians and fold medallists including Munir Dar, Javed Zaman Khan, Imtiaz Ahmed and Naqvi Mohsin. GCU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Khalid Aftab chaired the meeting. The meeting decided that the Indian Old Ravians, who have participated in subcontinent games before 1947, would also be taken on board for the crucial task. Professor Khalid Aftab said that the Government College University always provided full encouragement to sports right from its begining. "Our sports history can be traced from the 1931-32 session when GC became the overall champion and won the general trophy of the Punjab University for the first time," he said.

Addressing the meeting, former Olympian Munir dar appreciated the efforts of GCU Sports Broad and took full responsibility of compiling the record of Old Ravians hockey players who have represented the sub-continent and later Pakistan after independence since 1928 Hockey Olympics till date. Dar gave reference of mr. Jafar Shah who received gold medal in hockey in 1932and 1936. Former captain Pakistan cricket team Mr. Imtiaz Ahmed said that the list of GCU Roll of Honour in Sports awardees have been compiled and it would be extremely helpful for the purpose.

GCU INVITES OLD RAVIANS TO CHRONICLE ITS SPORTS ACHIEVMENTS (DAILY TIMES)

Lahore: The Government College University Lahore (GCU) has invited Old Ravians to compile its glorious 146-year sports history. the decision to record the services of GCU sports legends was taken at a meeting of GCU officials that included former Olympians and gold medallists, Munir Dar, Javed Zaman Khan, Imtiaz Ahmed and Naqvi Mohsin. GCU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Khalid Aftab chaired the meeting. At the meeting it was decided that the India Old Ravians, who participated in the subcontinent games before 1947, will also be taken on board for the important task. Professor Khalid said GCU had encouraged sports, "right from the beginning".

History: "Our sports history can be traced from the 1931-32 session when GC became the overall champion and won the general trophy of the Punjab University for the first time," he said. Professor Khalid said GC won the general trophy 12 times and secured the runner-up position four times from 1931 to 1947. During that period, GC produced a number of outstanding sportsmen who not only brought honour to their alma mater, but also had the distinction of representing India in Olympics and various other international sports events, he said. "After Independence, GC kept up its outstanding traditions in the field of sports and maintained excellence and edge over its rival institutions, winning the general all-round trophy 20 times and remaining the runner-ups 22 times from 1947-48 till 1988-89 in national games," he added. he said GCU still has a leading position in sports, adding that Ravians have won the inter-universities hocky and bodybuilding championship this year, besides securing positions in other sports. The vice chancellor said GCU also awards special scholarships to sportsmen in order to encourage them.

Olympian: Addressing the meeting, former Olympian Munir Dar appreciated the efforts of the GCU Sports Board and took full responsibility of compiling the records of Old Ravians hockey players who represented India and later Pakistan, starting from the 1928 Olympics to date. Dar gave the example of Jafar Shah who received the Gold Medal in Hockey in 1932 and 1936. Former Pakistan Cricket Team captain Imtiaz Ahmed said a list of GCU Rolls of honour in Sports awardees has already been compiled, and it would be extremely helpful to gather the required information.

Coaches' roles: Chief Minister Task Force for Sports Chairman Chaudary Muhammad Yaqoob suggested that the role of coaches and team managers should also be highlighted. Later the vice chancellor announced forming the committee of various games for compiling the required data. Ijaz Ahmed, naum Latif, Col(r) Saeed Ahmed Khan and Professor Ahmed Hussain also attended the meeting.

Lahore: Honorary Secretary the Old Ravians Union GCU, Professor Khalid Manzoor Butt has said that the research projects of the quality universities like GC University should be extensively funded so that they can play vital role in economic development of the country. He called on the government to refrain from reducing the education budget, saying that it would cast negtive impact on overall economic development. The Union demanded an increase of 50 per cent in the education budget for the fiscal year 2010-2011. Talking to media he said the demand for 50 per cent increase is made keeping in view the economic situation of the country. "Otherwise, the government should spend 5 percent of GDP on education which is as per international standards," he added.

Old Ravians pledge to support deserving Ravians

The Old Ravians has celebrated their annual reunion at the University Oval Ground with a pledge to support the deserving students of their alma mater. Lahore High Court Chief Justice Khawaja Muhammad Sharif was the chief guest. A large number of bureaucrats, noted industrialists and politicians attended the gala. The GCU historical Gothic Style building was also illuminated on the occasion. A music concert was also part of the reunion gala.  

Speaking on the occasion, Justice Khawaja Sharif said that GCU produced scholars like Allama Muhammad Iqbal and scientists like Dr Abdus Salam besides great sportsmen and Olympians. The chief justice paid tribute to his teachers and highlighted their role in his life. He also detailed several interesting incidents from his life including that when he contested college elections. The Chief Justice said that most of his family members are Old Ravians including his two sons and several judges of the Lahore High Court.

ORU President Kamran Lashari, the architect of reunion gala, said that Old Ravians remembered their Alma Mater not because of their degrees but due to the values, morals and confidence that the Government College taught them. He thanked GCU Vice Chancellor Dr Khalid Aftab for patronising the Old Ravians Union.

ORU Honorary Secretary Khalid Manzoor Butt said that the old students unions do not only attend reunions and dinners but also support the development of their alma maters and also support the financially poor students of the University. Old Ravians Union”s general body passed a resolution to support the deserving GCU students through the Endowment Fund Trust.

Khawaja Muhammad Sharif also gave away shields to the old Ravians who played eminent role in the development of GCU.  Later, noted singers including Waris Baig, Aany and Arif Lohar rocked the GCU Bokhari Auditorium with their fast tracks. Comedian Hassan Abbas, amateur Ravian and Old Ravian singers and a couple of dance groups also performed.  at this occasion.

Old Ravians reunion gala on March 20, 2010

The GC University Lahore will host an international reunion gala of Old Ravians on Saturday, March 20, at the university’s Oval Ground, it was announced at a meeting of the Old Ravians Union Executive Committee chaired by its President, Kamran Lashari. Noted writer Qudsia Bano will be the guest of honour at the mass reunion gala.

 

ORU Honorary Secretary Khalid Manzoor Butt said that above 1,500 old students of GCU from across the world will attend the gala. He said that invitations have also been extended to the Old Ravians in India. “They have studied at the Government College before partition,” he explained. He said that the ORU chapters have also been established in Canada, United Kingdom and the United States besides Chandigarh, New Delhi and Bombay in India.

In a condolence message to the bereaved family, Kamran Lashari ORU President and the Honorary Secretary jointly have prayed to the Almighty Allah to bless the departed soul in eternal peace and grant courage to the deceased family members to bear the irreparable loss with fortitude.

Lahore: The Old Ravians-XI Saturday beat the Ravians-XI by 30 runs at the annual festival cricket match at the Government College University Lahore Oval Ground. Former Secretary Pakistan Cricket Borad Col (r) Rafi Naseem was the guest of honour at the cricket match witnessed by a large number of university students and old Ravians. The Old Ravians scored 168 in 15 Overs at the loss of just six wickets. Mohsin Mujhaid scored 43 for Old Ravians. However Ravians-XI was bowled out for just 138 runs.

YOUSAF RAZA GILLANI FIFTH OLD RAVIAN TO BECOME PRIMISTER OF PAKISTAN

Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani has become the 6100th member of the Old Ravians Union, GC University Lahore. The Prime Minister was conferred the permanent membership of the union at the GCU 8th Convocation. He signed the membership form on the special request of ORU Honorary Secretary Khalid Manzoor Butt. Yousaf Raza Gillani remained the student of BA class of the Government College, Lahore from 1971 to 1973. He also stayed at the New Hostel during the period. Yousaf Raza Gillani is the fifth old Ravian who has become the Prime Minister. Earlier, Feroz Khan Noon, Mian Nawaz Sharif, Moin Qureshi and Mir Zafar Ullah Khan Jamali were also Old Ravians.

The ORU Executive Committee also discussed that Yousaf Raza Gillani has very close attachment with the institution that he especially requested the GCU Vice Chancellor Dr Khalid Aftab to ensure that his old teachers were invited to the convocation.

OLD RAVIAN UNION ORGANIZES ANNUAL DINNER AT OVAL GROUND

The Annual dinner of the Old Ravian Union GC University Lahore was held at the Oval Ground. In this traditional dinner a large number of Old Ravians gathered and revived their nostalgic memories of their student life. The segment of lucky draw with prizes was liked by the guests. At the end a music program was held in which famous singers enthralled the audience.

 

Speaking on the occasion Prof. Dr. Khalid Aftab said that there was no doubt that Ravians were dominating in every walk of life.

 

GCU has got the honor for giving the nation leaders, scientists, noble laureates, sportsmen and other learned figures during the last 145 years. He said that the Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences (ASSMS) was an important integral part of the GCU’s academic programs to convey knowledge. He said the school would soon meet the expectations of the academic community.

 

He further said that ASSMS had started the largest PhD Program of South Asia and presently more than 100 PhD scholars were pursuing their research at ASSMS. President of Old Ravian Union Kamran Lashari and the Honorary Secretary Khalid Manzoor Butt also spoke on the occasion.

The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industries (LCCI) has donated Rs. 2.5 million to the Endowment Fund Trust of GCU Lahore. The ORU members thanked Mian Muzzaffar President and members of the Executive Committee Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industries Mian Misbah-ur-Rehman and Mian Ashraf for the donation. A meeting of the Old Ravian Union chaired by Kamran Lashari was also held to finalize the arrangements of annual dinner to be held on 18th April at GC University Oval Ground.

OLD RAVIANS FAMILY PICNIC AND SPORTS EVENTS AT GCU

The Old Ravians Union organized a Family Picnic and Sports Events for members of the Union in the Oval ground of GC University here on Sunday February 8, 2009. A large number of Old Ravians, their families and children participated in different gymkhana sports events like children 60 meter race, women chaati race, singing competition among the women and men etc. Different stalls of food were also arranged for the convenience of the participants. The Secretary of Old Ravians Union Khalid Butt said that this is first time we are organizing this type of fun fare for the Old Ravians and their families for the recreation purpose.

Educational institutions should be set up following the Government College University’s Lahore (GCUL) pattern to provide quality education to the people across the province. These views were expressed by the Governor Punjab, Salman Taseer while addressing the oath- taking ceremony of newly elected executive committee of the Old Ravian Union held in the Bokhari Auditorium of the GC University Lahore. “Any institution from where the common man is barred is bound to end up in ruin,” the Governor added. “1 am proud of being invited in the Old Ravians Union ceremony”, he added. The governor said that organizer should have invited the Old Ravians from not only neighbouring countries but from other countries also. He expressed wish to be invited in the next ceremony.

Prof. Dr Sohail Ahmad Khan Acting Vice Chancellor said the institution had been in the Higher Education Commission’s ranking list of top universities in Pakistan. He drew the attention of the governor that the ongoing economic recession had started taking its roll on universities too, affecting funding for research. However, an endowment fund had been created at the GCU and the Old Ravians had been contributing to it in order to meet the shortfall. The GCU faculty members and Old Ravians attended the function.

Kamran Lashari (Chairman CDA) who has been re-elected as President of the ORU briefed about the future plans of the union. He said Old Ravians Un ion started its work from 1934 and today its students were serving across the country. “We are proud to have people like Allama Iqbal, Faiz Ahmad Faiz and Nobel Laureate Dr Abdus Salam. At present, the prime minister, the Punjab governor and the chief minister are Old Ravians,” said Lashari while inviting proposals from the union members to make it more vibrant

KAMRAN LASHARI ELECTED UNOPPOSED PRESIDENT OF OLD RAVIANS’ UNION ELECTIONS 2008-2010

Old Ravians’ Union (ORU) elections 2008-2010 held on Sunday and hundreds of old Government College University (GCU) students cast their vote. The GCU administration made special arrangements for security purposes. Old Ravians, without identity cards, were stopped from casting their votes.

Mansoor Feroz Khan was elected vice president with 526 votes defeating Malik Arshad Hamid who secured 306 votes. Talat Altaf Khan won the election for the position of vice president (female) securing 435 votes. She defeated Syeda Saadia Ghaznavi (349 votes). Javed Qasim was elected the associate secretary (580 votes) defeating Muhammad Zahid (247 votes). Mian Muhammad Ahmed Chhachhar was elected treasurer with 503 votes defeating Salman Haider Kazmi who secured 420 votes. Prof Ahmed Hussain was elected executive member for the decade 1941-1951 securing 15 votes. He defeated Muhammad Saleem Sheikh (nine votes). Yousaf Jameel Hussain was elected executive member for the decade 1991-2001 (315 votes) defeating Haroon Rasheed (260 votes).

Capital Development Authority Chairman Kamran Lahsari was already elected unopposed president of the ORU and former test cricketer Shafqat Rana was elected unopposed executive member 1950-1960. Board of Revenue member Qazi Afaq Hussain was elected executive member 1960-1970 and Pakistan Customs Deputy Superintendent Mahmood Ahmed Saeed was elected executive member 1970-1980. Warid Telecom General Manager Naveed Saeed was elected executive member for 1980-1990.

Honorary Secretary of ORU Khalid Butt said that the candidate for the 1990’s decade will be the representative of 2000 to 2008 as well and in the next election we would give representation to the students of 2000-2010.

ORU FELICITATES MIAN SHABAZ SHARIF ON HIS ELECTION AS CM PUNJAB

The Old Ravians Union (ORU) congratulated Mian Shahbaz Sharif on his election as Punjab chief minister. Mian Shahbaz Sharif is a registered member of Old Ravians Union. He has special affection with his alma mater, Government College University, Lahore. He inaugurated the union office in J997, besides announcing a handsome amount for the development of the college. Most of Shahbaz Sharif s family members including his sons and elder brother Mian Nawaz Sharif had studied at the Government College University, Lahore. The ORU hoped that Shahbaz Sharif would continue patronising the union and play his role for education promotion. The ORU’s President Kamran Lashari and the Secretary hoped that there would be a turnaround in the province as an eminent Old Ravian has taken over the government control.

KAMRAN LASHARI ELECTED ORU PRESEDENT UNOPPOSED

Kamran Lashari has been elected unopposed Old Ravians Union President. The other candidates for various posts of the ORU who have been elected unopposed include Ghulam Murtaza Paracha for the post of executive member (1931 to 1940), Qazi Afaq Hussain executive member (1961 to 1970), Mehmood Saeed Rawn executive member (1971 to 1980), Naveed Saeed executive member (1981-1990).

The elections would be held on 22nd June 2008 and the following candidates have submitted their nomination papers for various posts which include Mr. Mansoor Feroze and Malik Arshad Hamid Arif for the post Vice President. Mrs. Talat Altaf Khan and Syeda Saadia Ghaznavi for the post of Vice President (Ladies), Mr. Javed Qasim Warraich and Mr. Muhammad Zahid for the post of Associate Secretary whereas Mian Muhammad Ahmed Chhachhar and Dr. Salman Haider Kazmi have submitted their nomination papers for the post of Treasurer. Those who have submitted their nomination papers for the post of executive members include: Prof. Ahmed Hussain and Mr. Muhammad Saleem Sheikh (1941 to 1950), Mr. Saeed Ahmed Buksh and Mr. Shafqat Rana (1951 to 1960), Mr. Yousaf Jameel Hussain Rizvi and Dr. Harsoon Rashid (1991 to 2007). Ms. Farkhanda Amin, however, withdrew her nomination papers which she submitted for the post of executive member (1991 to 2007).

OLD RAVIANS UNION ELECTION ON 22nd JUNE, 2008

The Old Ravians Elections Committee consisted of Khawaja Muhammad Sharif, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Akram Kashmiri, Javaid Altaf Advocate and Prof. Khalid Manzoor Butt has announced the election schedule of the elections for various office positions of the Union. The polls will be held on 22nd June, 2008.  It was also decided that intimation letters regarding elections schedule would be posted to all members of the union by May 25, 2008 and nomination papers would be obtained during June 2-3, 2008 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. However, the members will have to submit the nomination papers on June 4th and 5th in the union office and the office will remained opened from 9:0 AM to 2:00 PM only for this purpose.

The list of the received nomination papers will be displayed on 5th June 2008 at 6:00 PM on the notice board at the main entrance. The last date for filing of objections against nomination papers and withdrawl of nomination papers of the candidates is 7th June 2008. The final list of the candidates would be displayed on June 9, 2008. The Committee also announced that candidates will have to deposit Rs. 1000 as nomination fee for every office of the union along with nomination papers and any candidate can received an authentic list of the registered members by depositing Rs. 1000 in the account of Old Ravians Unions maintained at UBL GCU branch. The Committee also approved the old pattern of the ballot paper and every voter will have to prove his identity either through national ID card, passport or through Old Ravians Union identity card before casting the vote. It was also announced that the new membership of the union would remained suspended from June 1 to 8, 2008.

The Vice Chancellor, Deans and ORU condole with CDA Chairman over his mother death

 

 

The Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Khalid Aftab, Deans of the University and members of the Old Ravians Union (ORU) GC University Lahore have expressed their deep condolence on the sad demise of the mother of Kamran Lashari, President ORU and Chairman Capital Development Authority Islamabad. In a condolence message to the bereaved family they have prayed to Almighty Allah to bless the departed soul with eternal peace and grant courage to the bereaved family to bear the irreparable loss with fortitude.
